Our Moment Spring 2008 Objectives

- Reach out to students in the College, MSB, and NHS to increase their participation and interest in Our Moment and its initiatives. A project group will be formed to plan an event designed to bring together students from different disciplines and interest them in Development studies and OM.
- Emphasize the nature of Our Moment as a peer and resource network for students interested in development studies. This might include planning more social events for discussion of development issues, broadcasting to the general listserv a call for project ideas that OM might take on, and expanding the OM “network” to other DC-area schools.
- Transition from focusing on one MDG per month to a semester issue, to give each semester a thematic focus around which we plan 2-3 awareness events. This spring’s focus will be Youth in Politics from a development perspective.

Specific projects:
• Social Entrepreneurship
Our Moment will continue its efforts in organizing a Social Business Plan Competition at Georgetown, in conjunction with the Georgetown Entrepreneurship Organization (GEO).

• Technology, Extranet, and International Service Database
OM will continue its work on the International Service Database, with an emphasis on getting contributions and publicizing. Our Moment will continue to send out its weekly broadcast email. In addition, we are looking to develop a development extranet. The extranet would look a lot like the library tutorials that exist for other topics; it would include links to web resources that will facilitate research for students writing papers on development.

• Guatemala Medical Mission
Elena Oviatt is working on organizing a medical mission to Guatemala this summer. Our Moment’s involvement is fairly limited; we are providing guidance and suggestions as well as helping Elena reach out to interested students through our listserv.

• Documentary Screening
We would like to host an event on the intersection of youth, art, and politics with international hip-hop music as the artistic medium.

• Network for Students in Middle East Studies
This is a project that seeks to build a network, modeled on the idea that founded OM, to link students interested in the Middle East and the Muslim World who study in the DC area. Peer information exchange, networking, and providing a resource network will be the primary goals of the group. OM may be able to collaborate with the network for an event on political and economic development in the Middle East.
