About the Conference
In 2005, Our Moment hosted a conference at Georgetown University for DC-area college students interested in international development. Over two hundred students attended last year's conference. In October 2006, Our Moment will host another conference. The conference, again dedicated to international development, will focus on what student leaders can do to initiate and grow movements on their own campuses to promote awareness of the issues addressed by the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals.
The conference will feature two sets of workshops: in the morning, they will be substantive, addressing academic topics in international development and issues such as the Copenhagen Consensus. In the afternoon, the workshops will be advocacy-based, focusing on what student leaders can do on their campuses and in their community to forward international development. There will also be a series of networking sessions to connect with other DC-area students and learn about initiatives and events on their campus and what their organizations do. The conference will end with a keynote address.
The Millennium Development Goals
At the 2000 UN Millennium Summit, world leaders from rich and poor countries alike committed themselves-at the highest political level-to a set of eight time-bound targets that, when achieved, will end extreme poverty worldwide by 2015. (Source: http://www.milleniumcampaign.org)
Goals of the Conference
We hope to expand the Our Moment movement and encourage other campuses to increase awareness of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). We hope attendees will return to their respective campuses and unite different students groups under the basic framework of the MDGs.
Attendees will come away from the conference with two things. First, they will have gained a greater understanding of the intricacies of international development and direction on how to continue their learning. They can then utilize a student network of information and communication using the World Wide Web as a platform for the promotion of a DC-area student movement.
Who We Need
DC-area college students dedicated to promoting international development and the MDGs on their campuses. Following the conference, Our Moment hopes to serve as an inter-campus forum for student leaders working on international development issues. Students interested in forming an Our Moment branch on their campus, or expanding an existing organization to include MDG-related advocacy should apply.
Who We Are
Our Moment-Georgetown is a student group at Georgetown University. Our goal is to act effectively as an umbrella group concerned with issues in international development and the Millennium Development Goals. Our Moment-Georgetown is dedicated to coordinating cooperation and communication between the many student groups at Georgetown University working to fight global poverty, HIV/AIDS, international health, child survival, etc.
Our Moment also hopes to serve as a locus of inter-campus activities relating to international development. It aims to increase the frequency and quality of international development focused programming so that pertinent groups recognize the MDGs as a framework that can be used in relating development issues to one another.
